1960: Indo German Cultural Society established with the efforts of a few Germans and
Indians to develop interactions between the 'locals' and the 'foreigners,' fostering
friendship between the two countries by exchange of cultures and common interests.
Post WWII, Germany was spreading its wings resulting in establishment of Max Mueller
Bhavans in India. IGCS has the unique distinction of partnering with Goethe Institute in
setting up Max Mueller Bhavan in Bangalore.
Over the years the IGCS has presented German and Indian culture in accomplished
performances: Indian classical dance, German classical music, Indian and German films,
several joint outings, wine evenings etc.
The Bangalore version of OKTOBERFEST by IGCS was a quite a quaint affair in the seventies.
Turns into a mega 'sought-after' affair in 2001 courtesy the then Minister of State in
Bavaria. A 20-member band was sent to Bangalore, the band and the IGCS are inseparable for the OKTOBERFEST since then.
IGCS has grown from strength with very prominent Indians serving as its President
including Mr. A P Venkateswaran, an Indian diplomat, who was the former Foreign Secretary
of India.
